Advanced placement track

In conjunction with its unique curriculum, Founders College features an unusual Advanced Placement Track (APT). If you already have the basic knowledge covered in selected courses from the core curriculum, you are eligible to apply for APT.

As with ordinary advanced placement programs found at most colleges, it ensures that an exceptional student will not be bored by having to repeat material that has already been mastered. But the Founders program goes far beyond this. It intellectually challenges the students by advancing their knowledge of a particular subject, through special, in-depth Advanced Placement Track coursework.

The special courses for the Advanced Placement Track take the form of either directed independent study or a small seminar of between four and ten students. Students on APT will study a body of knowledge in more detail, complexity, and with more advanced knowledge.

Consideration for the Advanced Placement Track program is on the basis of verifiable achievement in the subjects taught within our required two-year curriculum. To verify an applicant’s degree of knowledge, Founders will require detailed information about the courses that a student has taken, about the quality of the student’s work in those courses, and about the school that offered the courses. To determine how much knowledge a prospective student has about a given subject, we will look at, for example, the assigned readings, the school’s curriculum, course syllabi, the student’s writing and grammar proficiency. If need be, we will discuss the student’s work with the school’s headmaster or individual instructors. Admission to the Advanced Placement Track program is also an option for our Early College program students.

Students will be admitted to Advanced Placement Track courses on a per-course basis. A student may wish to apply to only one course or to many courses, depending on his or her degree of knowledge and skills. The Dean of Admissions, the Dean of Faculty, and the Chair of the relevant department will make the final decisions on applications to the program.
