Cultural activities

Virginia is a state rich in culture and history, offering museums, theaters, festivals, events and historical sites that allow visitors to explore something different every weekend.

In addition to the top-shelf amenities offered on our stunning campus, Founders College is surrounded by an array of activities and attractions within a short drive. Also, the cities of Richmond, Virginia, and Durham and Raleigh, in North Carolina, are all within driving distance.

The list below offers just a sampling of the arts, and historical and cultural activities that students, faculty and visitors to Founders College can enjoy in the area.

The Academy Gallery (www.theacademygallery.com)

There was a time when the most successful artists were those who furnished their work with a quality of visual literacy that has been almost forgotten today. The artworld has become nebulous, this vocabulary degraded to confused murmurs, and what once were concrete principles of Fine Visual Art seem now to be entirely arbitrary to an often befuddled audience. Safeguarded by only a few dozen artists and teachers, the skills and techniques developed by the 19th Century have been preserved but made a rareity. In conjunction with the Academy of Art at Founders College, which will have the first ‘classical’ academic fine art program in history to be available at a four--year college, we at the Academy Gallery have made it our mission to integrate the techniques of the masters with the ideas of our contemporaries.

The Prizery

The Prizery is a 100-year-old building that once served as a tobacco processing facility. Today it still stands overlooking the banks of the Dan River, contributing some culture to the county. In 2002, renovation began to transform this building into an art and performance center. The center includes a welcome center, spaces for community functions, displays on the area’s tobacco heritage, an art gallery, and a performing arts theatre.

South Boston-Halifax County Museum

This is the place to come and view the rich collection of the county’s history. Artifacts and historical documents are kept to enhance the knowledge of any who want to experience the history. There is much to be viewed in the 16,000 square feet of rotating and permanent displays.

Civil Rights Heritage Trail

This trail honors the African Americans, American Indians, and women that pursued equality. It is the first trail in Virginia of this nature. There are four designated sites of this trail throughout the county. The trail is inspiring and delivers an important message of the county’s history and the will of all of those that longed to be treated equally.
