Advising – Beyond the classroom

Founders College takes seriously its mission of guiding students in their intellectual and moral development. We believe in the power and sovereignty of the individual’s mind and of the individual’s character development. This belief affects not only how we designed the curriculum and our commitment to high-quality teaching, but also how we approach advising, career placement, and post-graduate outcomes.

Founders assigns a faculty advisor to you as soon as you enroll. These advisors know the college’s curriculum intimately, and are uniquely able to offer academic advice. Unlike the cookie-cutter advice that students often receive at other colleges, our advisors develop a close relationship with you so as to offer personalized advice.

Like all faculty at Founders, advisors are on campus and available for students throughout the week, holding frequent office hours. During the second semester of the sophomore year, when you are about to complete the two-year required curriculum, you will meet with your advisor at least once per semester to plan your major and choice of electives. Your advisor and the dean of students will monitor your progress and academic achievement to ensure that you make the most of your education and your future goals.

In addition to the career advice that the senior faculty offer, you can take advantage of the Founders College Career Center (FCCC). The Career Center provides students with career counseling, internship coordination, graduate school advice, recruiting programs, and other post-graduation information. The FCCC presents periodic workshops that can help you become familiar with the process of finding a job and getting hired. Counselors are available to discuss résumé preparation, job-hunting strategies, interview techniques, salary negotiations, benefits packages, and other issues. Staff is also available to discuss applying to graduate and professional schools, including how to write a statement of purpose, cover letters, and fellowship applications.

The staff maintains an extensive library of materials on career-related topics, including graduate school guides and fellowship databases. If you’re interested in graduate school, the Center has test-prep materials and can help you schedule the entrance examinations. In addition to the physical resources of the Center, the FCCC Web site contains a wealth of information.

The FCCC maintains a database of Alumni and Friends of Founders who are eager to help our students with internships, career advancement, and graduate studies. Throughout the year, the College sponsors Career Fairs, where recruiters from businesses and organizations across the nation come to discuss jobs with our students. During the Career Fair, the Center also organizes panel discussions and workshops to help students with career planning. We also have an extensive list of local jobs that are available to students while they are in school.
